Prepping Your HVAC System for Fall

Advantage Air HVAC • September 14, 2022

It's hard to believe another summer is coming to an end. Before you know it, you will pack your shorts and t-shirts away, which will mean it's finally sweater weather. You'll be cozying up to your fireplace with hot cocoa instead of grilling outside.

Prepping your HVAC system for fall

Having some routine tasks taken care of before the season is in full swing will ensure the proper functioning of your units throughout the upcoming cold weather.

1. Change Air Filters

Give your furnace a fresh start with a new filter before you fire it up for the year. They should be changed regularly throughout the year, but especially before winter. Even a tiny amount of dust accumulation can reduce your system's efficiency by as much as 10 percent.

It's also an excellent time to have an HVAC professional evaluate your furnace system to see if it's time for you to update your heating unit. This is especially true if you have an older system or purchased a home recently. Ensuring your system is up to date will help keep your heating bill under control and ensure proper ventilation of carbon monoxide gas.

2. End of Season AC Tune Up

Let one of our team take a look at your AC. We'll ensure there are no leakages or mildew growth. We will clean the coils and will drain any lines. It's easier to deal with a small problem before it becomes significant.

3. Clear Outdoor Areas

Take care of any weeds and foliage that may have grown around your AC unit over the summer. It's also a good idea to remove any fallen leaves and grass clippings as these may attract bugs and animals looking to keep warm. If you continue to use your AC on warmer days, having growth near the unit poses a fire hazard.

4. Adjust Thermostat

When your kids are back in school, your house is likely empty for most of the day. There's no sense in heating an empty home. The evenings will also start to become cooler, so you'll want to adjust your thermostat to account for that.

5. Professional Furnace Tune-Up

Even if you don't need a new furnace, it's always a good idea to schedule a professional tune-up when the weather changes. An HVAC professional will inspect your system and calibrate the thermostat; they will also test the airflow, measure voltages, and tighten electrical connections. This will ensure your family's safety and warmth throughout the coming winter.
