Signs Your AC Needs Service

Warm weather is (finally) on its way, and with it comes the need to turn on your AC. You don’t want to be left without a working air conditioner during the summer months, so be on the lookout for the following things to ensure your AC is in good shape:

Signs to Watch For

  1. Hot Air: Air conditioners shouldn’t take more than a few seconds to blow cool air. If you feel warm or hot air coming out of yours, it’s a definite sign of a problem. The fix may be as simple as replacing the refrigerant, but the longer you wait, the more likely the issue will worsen.
  2. Weird Smells: Funky smells are a common issue with air conditioners. Many homeowners think a musty smell comes with the territory, but erasing the unpleasant odor is pretty straightforward. Mold and mildew can build up in the housing, but cleaning the coils and air filters will usually solve this problem. If you notice a burning smell, turn your AC off immediately and give us a call. The cause may be several things, including a broken capacitor or defective electrical components, but all require professional service.
  3. Inconsistent Airflow: Your AC should always blow with the same force. You may need to replace your air filter if you notice a weaker airflow.
  4. Increased Energy Bill: If you have a noticeable increase in your electric bill and haven’t been using more energy, your AC could be the culprit. Your HVAC system can make up as much as 50% of your energy cost, so you want to be sure everything is working as it should be.
  5. Unusual Noises: Everything powered by a motor will make some noise, but if your AC is louder than usual or making sounds you’ve never heard, you should have it checked by a professional.
  6. Frequent Cycling: If your AC turns on and off more often than usual, it’s a sign of something malfunctioning.
  7. Humidity: The air coming from your air conditioner should never be moist. Damp output or an always full drip pan means it’s time for service.
  8. Lots of Service Calls: If you’ve been calling for HVAC service a few times a year, it may be time to consider replacing your AC. Any reputable HVAC business will suggest a replacement system over allowing you to have an unreliable air conditioner.
  9. Older Unit: Even the highest quality air conditioners succumb to wear and tear over time. If yours is over ten years old, you can expect to need a new one soon, and more service calls in the meantime.
